Artist Biography:
Rowlandson, Thomas 1756 - 1827
Famous draughtsman, etcher and aquatint engraver of political and social satires,sporting
subjects, landscapes and topographical views. Born in London the son of a
bankrupt merchant, he studied at Dr. Barrow's School and at the RA School.
Before 1800, he travelled extensively on the Continent and in the British
Isles. He lived and worked in London, etching single plates, sets of sporting
prints and book illustrations for the publishers S.W. Fores, R. Ackerman,
and T. Tegg. It is said that he gambled away most of his earnings as well
as his inheritances.
